Perhaps this letter gathers a series of reflections that will not interest everyone. This text was born first of all as a sharing with myself. I would almost call it a confession, beginning with a question mark: “but who am I?”

On alternating days I find myself asking exactly this question, retracing who I have been. As if I had crossed a threshold: that rite of passage which is childbirth, brought not only the birth of our son, but also my own birth as a mother.

Forse questa lettera raccoglie una serie di riflessioni che non interesseranno a tutti.

Questo scritto infatti nasce più come condivisione, prima di tutto con me stessa. La chiamerei quasi una confessione, che inizia con un punto interrogativo … ovvero: “ma io chi sono?”

A giorni alterni mi ritrovo a chiedermi questa domanda, e a ripercorrere chi sono stata. Quasi come se avessi oltrepassato una soglia, quel rito di passaggio che è stato il parto, ha portato non solo alla nascita di nostro figlio ma anche alla mia come mamma.

January

2026 began without me even noticing.

I find myself writing a postcard announcing the birth of my son, and I write by hand: January 2026. I say out loud to my husband, “This is the first time I’m writing the new year,” while I realise how much the hand is connected to the mind. I really needed to begin writing again, starting from there. But above all, starting from here.

Motherhood has brought new reflections and new images within me. My body has been listening, and alongside it, new drawings have emerged, where the hand became an extension of newly acquired “antennas”.

È iniziato questo 2026 senza nemmeno accorgermene. Mi ritrovo così a scrivere una cartolina, quella che annuncia la nascita di mio figlio, e scrivo a penna, gennaio 2026. Dico a voce alta a mio marito “è la prima volta che scrivo il nuovo anno” e mi rendo conto quanto sia una conferma che la mano è connessa alla mente. Avevo proprio bisogno di ricominciare a scrivere, partendo da li. Ma soprattutto partendo da qui.

La maternità ha portato in me delle nuove riflessioni, nuove immagini. Il mio corpo è stato in ascolto e con me sono nati nuovi disegni, dove la mano, è stata estensione di quelle nuove acquisite “antenne” …

February

It is 8:38 on a Friday morning. I am sitting on the sofa with a blanket, returning to what feels like a ritual I had not practiced in a long time: listening, and letting the hand leave its trace, with the pencil as its extension.

Outside, the sky is grey and clear at the same time. It seems as though it wants to snow again, but the temperatures are too high. The world beyond the window feels muffled in those early morning hours when movement on the street where I live is still slow. A few cars here and there, the tram, distant voices. Inside the walls of the house it is temporarily silent. My baby fell asleep twenty minutes ago, accompanied by the sound of birds and frogs. Here it almost feels like being in a forest, exactly the way I like it.

I have always felt a sense of freedom in open spaces.

I carry a vivid memory of summer mountain valleys we used to visit in Austria during family holidays not far from home. Above all I remember the green, in contrast with the turquoise blue of the sky. Not surprisingly, those are still my favorite colours today.

Where I live now, in the Netherlands, winters are very pale by comparison. Growing up in Italy with hills behind the house, I almost always took the colour green for granted. There, evergreen trees mixed with those that lose their leaves, filling the eyes even in the cold seasons. So when spring finally arrives in the “lowlands”, the green that dresses the trees fills not only the eyes, but also the spirit.

Febbraio

Sono le 8.38 di un venerdì mattino, seduta sul divano con una coperta, per quello che mi sembra un rituale che non praticavo da molto, quello appunto di mettermi in ascolto e lasciar che la mano lasci la sua traccia, con come estensione una matita.

Fuori, un cielo grigio e terso, sembra voglia nevicare, ancora, ma le temperature sono troppo alte. Un mondo, quello al di là della finestra, ovattato, nelle ore del mattino in cui il movimento nella strada che abito, è ancora lento. Qualche macchina qui e li, il tram, delle voci. Dentro le mura di casa, è temporaneamente silenzioso. Il mio bimbo ha preso sonno venti minuti fa, con sottofondo il canto di uccellini e rane. Qui, sembra di essere nel bosco, proprio come piace a me.

Ho sempre provato un senso di libertà negli spazi aperti.

Ho un bellissimo ricordo impresso delle vallate estive di montagna che visitavamo andando in Austria, in quelle vacanze di famiglia, non lontano da casa. Soprattutto ne ricordo il colore verde, di contrasto al blu turchese del cielo. Non a caso oggi i miei colori preferiti.

Dove abito nei Paesi Bassi, gli inverni sono, a contrasto, molto pallidi nei colori. Io, cresciuta con le colline dietro casa, in Italia, ho quasi sempre dato per scontato il colore verde come presenza costante. Li, alberi sempreverdi misti a quelli che si spogliano, riempiono gli occhi anche nelle stagioni fredde. Così, quando inizia la primavera nelle “terre-basse”, il verde che veste gli alberi non riempie solo gli occhi, ma anche lo spirito.

March

Speaking of trees, since last year I have begun researching, reading, and working on themes connected to them.

It all began with an observation my father pointed out to me years ago in the mountains.
“Do you see those large reddish patches on the slopes?” he asked.
Then he continued:
“It’s a strange phenomenon. Those trees are usually evergreen, their needles don’t turn red even in autumn. They say it is caused by the bostrico (bark beetle) — a small insect that feeds on the sap and digs tunnels under the bark, causing the trees to weaken.”

After some years, this bark beetle increasingly inhabits the Italian Alpine mountains — and not only there. A very interesting book I recommend, if you are curious to explore this topic further, is Sottocorteccia. Un viaggio tra i boschi che cambiano by Pietro Lacasella and Luigi Torreggiani. It is only available in Italian, but perhaps some of you might know other readings in different languages dealing with similar themes in other territories. If so, I would love to hear your suggestions.

Marzo

A proposito di alberi, dall’anno scorso ho iniziato a ricercare, leggere e lavorare proprio su tematiche a loro legati.

Il tutto è iniziato con un’osservazione fatta qualche anno fa in montagna, messami all’occhio da mio papa’:

“Vedi quelle grandi chiazze rossicce sui versanti?” mi aveva chiesto allora.

E continuava “…è un fenomeno strano, quegli alberi solitamente sono sempre verdi, le loro foglie, gli aghi, non diventano rossi nemmeno in autunno. Dicono che è dovuto al bostrico, un piccolo coleottero che si nutre della loro linfa e scava delle gallerie all’interno della corteccia, provocandone il deperimento.”

Dopo alcuni anni, il bostrico sempre più abita le montagne (e non solo) alpine italiane. Un libro molto interessante che segnalo se foste interessati ad approfondire è Sottocorteccia. Un viaggio tra i boschi che cambiano di Pietro Lacasella e Luigi Torreggiani. Solo disponibile in italiano, ma magari qualcuno di voi ha suggerimenti per altre letture, magari scritte in altre lingue e riguardanti simili tematiche in altri territori. Se sì, fatemi sapere, sarebbe curioso condividere questa tematica da diversi punti di vista.

During pregnancy, I began to feel more and more like a tree. I realized that I was — that we were — putting down new roots. Lines not straight, but wavy, soft, drawn in graphite rather than ink. Fertile lines that I began to draw more and more as I discovered that a new someone was growing in my belly.

Our separate yet connected roots met in different ways.

They visited me, along with spirals and flowers.

Then, first through reading, and later by going into the field, I began following the traces of the bark beetle — one who digs like a careful wood engraver. And I began to dig, symbolically and literally, rediscovering sculpture once again, this time through the form of woodcut printing.

Durante la gravidanza appunto mi sono io stessa iniziata a sentire sempre più come un albero. Mi sono resa conto che stavo (e stavamo) mettendo nuove radici. Linee non rette, ondose, morbide, disegnate a grafite non ad inchiostro. Quelle linee fertili che ho iniziato a disegnare sempre più quando ho scoperto che un nuovo qualcuno cresceva nella mia pancia.

Le nostre radici separate ma unite, si incontrarono in modi diversi.

Esse mi hanno visitata, insieme alle spirali e ai fiori.

Poi, prima leggendo, poi andando sul campo, ho iniziato a seguire anche le tracce del bostrico, colui che scava come un attento xilografo. Ed io ho iniziato a scavare simbolicamente e letteralmente, riscoprendo, ancora una volta, la scultura, nella forma di stampa a intaglio.

Sculpture is an art form I have loved since the beginning: first when I started working with clay during my high school studies, and later during my years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, where I immersed myself in it, discovering different new materials — wood, marble, wax, and metals — on that island somewhat suspended in time, surrounded by the lagoon.

When, last year, I wrote the updated version of my book Colour is Alive: Botanical Ink-making for Screen-printing, I could not avoid including a phrase that my professor, the sculptor Giuseppe La Bruna, repeated to us constantly while we were carving wood:

“Wood is Alive.”

Those words echoed in my ears for years, rooting themselves deeply and reappearing during my research into natural inks for screen printing, which began six years ago.

Colour is Alive. It is an echo — a separate but connected root of my sculptor’s soul.

I won’t dwell further on the book here, but I’ve included the link above if you’d like to order it. Between the routines of being a new mother, I managed a few focused hours to reopen orders, and I’m eager to see who it reaches next. It’s always a wonderful surprise…

La scultura è una forma d’arte che ho amato sin dall’inizio, quando al liceo artistico ho iniziato a lavorare la creta e poi durante gli studi universitari all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia dove ho potuto immergermici, scoprendo nuovi diversi materiali dal legno, al marmo, alla cera e i metalli, in quell’isola un po’ senza tempo, circondata dalla laguna.

Così quando ho scritto la versione aggiornata del mio libro Colour is Alive: Botanical Ink-making for Screen-printing, non ho potuto non inserire la guida che il mio professore, lo scultore Giuseppe La Bruna ci ha sempre ripetuto scolpendo il legno…

“Il Legno è Vivo.”

Una frase che ha rimbombato nelle mie orecchie a lungo tanto da radicarsi e ripresentarsi proprio insieme alla mia ricerca sugli inchiostri naturali per la serigrafia, iniziata sei anni fa.

Il Colore è Vivo, dunque, non è altro che un eco, una radice separata ma collegata, mai sradicata, della mia anima da scultrice.

Non mi dilungo di più sul mio libro, ma lascio li in alto il link per ordinarlo. Ho avuto un paio d’ore di focus, tra la routine di nuova mamma, per riaprire gli ordini, e non vedo l’ora di vedere chi raggiungerà ora. È sempre una bella sorpresa…

Sometimes there’s so much to say that the best way is to let the work speak for itself—in this case, the book.

I opened this newsletter with the same quote that opens Colour is Alive (on the image above, in its original language, just as I first encountered it). I found the quote by chance in an old natural science textbook in an antiquarian bookshop in my hometown. I remember thinking: You’re coming home with me.

Sometimes, it only takes one seed for another to grow.

My work grows in that way—through time, layering, and slow maturation. Colour is Alive is the result of nearly five years of such growth: an ongoing research into botanical ink-making for screen-printing, plant colours, and the quiet ways they transform us.

September always feels like a month of change and new beginnings. Maybe it’s because it’s my birth month, or the shift in seasons (already very present here in the Netherlands), or because in Italy—where I grew up—it’s the time when school starts again after the summer break.

I’ve always loved learning. In high school, I was drawn to subjects like literature, philosophy, art history, and biology. I also loved the more hands-on classes, especially sculpture, where I could physically shape materials and bring ideas to life. It was there that I discovered how thoughts—and even feelings—can take form through touch and process.

Over the years, this curiosity has grown into a practice I deeply care about. And now, I love sharing what I’ve learned with others.

Today, I’m excited to tell you about a course I’ll be teaching next year: Printing & Painting on Textiles with Natural Colour, organised and hosted by Plants & Colour.

Settembre ha sempre avuto per me il sapore del cambiamento e dei nuovi inizi.

In my sessions, we’ll start by making vibrant plant-based printing ink pastes, move on to pigment extracts, and finally bring everything together through screen printing—where I’ll share some of my favourite tips and process insights.

After a summer pause, August and September hold a special place in my heart. I want to share a story of threads, hands, and materials interwoven: the story of my wedding dress, which carries memories and transformation.

Behind this dress lies a history of craftsmanship, of love, and of generational passage.

Made 44 years ago by my maternal grandmother with all her mastery, it was my dear mum’s wedding dress. Reopening it, touching the seams, bringing it back into motion meant connecting with her and her mother, who had passed away the year before.

To transform it without erasing its story, I knew I wanted to involve Silvia — an artist and dear friend with whom I’ve shared many textile projects. Silvia has hands that think, eyes that read bodies, and a knowledge that resonates with the women of my family

Our work became a true collaboration of many hands: my sculptural vision for shapes, her sartorial wisdom, my mother’s courage in letting us rework a piece of her history, and my grandmother’s invisible guidance.

We chose to reduce the volumes, elongate the lines, reshape the lace bodice — delicate but still intact — and construct a new skirt in lotus silk, a material I wished to carry with me to preserve my bond with the natural world. Silvia followed every step with care and dedication, giving new life to a dress that now brings together generations, voices, and sensibilities.

What remains with me is not only a garment, but the proof that textiles can weave threads that are both physical and emotional. Strength and delicacy intertwined, made visible in form.

In the quiet moments since, I keep returning to the thought of those hands, woven together in this dress. It’s a reminder that making, shaping, and caring can carry memory forward, and that sometimes a piece of fabric holds more than its form: it holds the presence of those who came before and the stories we continue to weave.

With the arrival of late spring, I find myself drawn again to the quiet, attentive gestures that making requires. The preparation of materials, the rhythm of printing, the dialogue between hand and earth.

As you can see, I’ve changed the way I share my newsletter. As others, I’ve been looking for a space where I can share thoughts in a way that feels less condensed than social media—somewhere that allows for reflection and depth. This letters will be in English and Italian.

Piego gli angoli delle pagine, scrivo nei libri, li studio, e lascio che siano loro a studiare me.

I believe books (as music) say a lot about who we are—the ones we read, the ones we buy, those we leave behind, the ones we are gifted or lent, and the ones we lend to others—all telling a story of listening.

Credo che i libri (come la musica) dicano molto di chi siamo—quelli che leggiamo, quelli che compriamo, quelli che lasciamo indietro, quelli che ci vengono donati o prestati, e quelli che prestiamo agli altri—tutti raccontano una storia d’ascolto.

I hear my nonexistent bookshelf growing, because my books are not on shelves but on surfaces, alongside other found objects—pebbles, twigs, seashells, flowers I come across and bring home. I like to think they converse with each other, because that’s how it feels to me.

My books rise in volume, my favorites I like to see, flip through, have coffee with. Someone at home complains about the growing piles of books, but I find them good company to listen to. Recently we did buy a bookshelf, after all, but as you may have guessed, it won’t hold only books—because I don’t like leaving them alone.

Sento crescere la mia libreria inesistente, perché i miei libri non stanno sugli scaffali ma sulle superfici, accanto ad altri oggetti trovati—sassolini, rametti, conchiglie, fiori che incontro e porto a casa. Mi piace pensare che conversino tra loro, perché è così che io li percepisco.

I miei libri si alzano di volume, e i preferiti mi piace vederli, sfogliarli, prendere il caffè con loro. Qualcuno a casa si lamenta delle pile sempre più alte, ma io li trovo una compagnia piacevole da ascoltare. Di recente abbiamo comprato una libreria, dopotutto, ma come forse avrai immaginato, non conterrà solo libri—perché non mi piace lasciarli soli.
